This is one of the most critical and confusing aspect of working on the
Internet. Does it seem like every search engine has different
rules and that the rules are always changing? Well, the reason it
seems that way is that every search engine has different rules and the
rules are always changing!
Here are a few of the basic
principles for good search engine placement:
-
Concentrate on useful, solid content
first, last and always! Web surfers look for good content more than
anything else on the Internet. If they find it on your site,
they will stay longer and come back more often. Loyal visitors make
good customers.
-
Keep your website active
by changing and adding to the content on a regular basis.
-
Make sure that the words
which describe your site are on the first page and in your meta
tags. Visitors much be able to figure out what your site is
all about within 10 seconds of arriving or you are likely to lose
them to the dreaded "Back Button" on their browser!
-
Avoid the temptation to
alter your site to artificially improve your search engine
placement. You may find your site permanently banned from the search
engine when your "trick" is discovered.
-
Keep track of your web
traffic and the search terms surfers are using to find your site. You can learn valuable information to help
you make improvements, provide more of the information your visitors
want and remove information or links, which are not
productive. For example, if you have a site about gardening
and you learn that many people find your site by typing in the
search term "gardening tools", you would be wise to find
some way to include more information about this topic and to include
gardening tools visitors can buy on your website. If your company
does not sell gardening tools, then arrange to find another company
or affiliate program which does and which will pay you a commission
on sales originating from your website.
